Shared dormitory accommodation is offered by Green Tortoise Hostels San Francisco. Guests have access to a shared kitchen and a large lounge with free table tennis and billiards. Great food overall, nice breakfast spread and free dinners every Mon, Wed and Fri (which was an unexpected bonus). Really loved the activities planned every evening, it made it easy to meet people and make friends. European Hostel 2 stars

South of Market (SOMA), San Francisco

This San Francisco hostel is located 3 blocks from cable cars and the Civic Center. The hostel features a full-service kitchen and rooftop balcony and bar with views of downtown.

Dorm rooms with 4, 6, or 8 beds and private rooms are available at the San Francisco European Hostel. The common room has a large TV and free Wi-Fi for guests to use. A complicated situation and the people at the hostel really went out of their way to be helpful. Even though this is a simple place to stay, I must give them a rating of 10 on account of the graciousness which they have shown, from excepting food deliveries, to be super polite on the telphone... I am impressed. Thank you.

Hostels. What are they?

Way more than just a cheap place to sleep, hostels are a social way to travel and meet like-minded people. Common areas like shared kitchens or games rooms are great ways to swap tips, tricks and travel stories with backpackers from all over the world.

Hostels have come a long, long way since the first youth hostel opened in 1912. From budget 'crash-pads' to five-star 'poshtels', today, hostels are for everybody, so whether you'd prefer a bed in a shared dorm or your own private room, you'll find most hostels are cheaper than a local hotel and far more fun.
