HI San Francisco Downtown Hostel 3 stars

Downtown San Francisco, San Francisco

Centrally located in San Francisco just 5 minutes’ walk from shopping and dining in Union Square, HI San Francisco Downtown Hostel boasts a theatre room. Each bright room is practically furnished and includes a continental breakfast. The bathrooms and showers were down the hall but they were very clean and updated. It was nice to have individual electrical outlets for our phones right beside our beds. We also had extra storage under the beds. The kitchen was bright and cheery with nice views of the street. As a woman travelling alone I felt safe with the security guard at the front door and having to fob in at night. The Hilton was right across the street so it was nice of mix of people in the neighbourhood. Main shopping area was a block away. I used the public transit to get to the beach and museum which was fast, inexpensive and the drivers were always so friendly and helpful.

Hostels. What are they?

Way more than just a cheap place to sleep, hostels are a social way to travel and meet like-minded people. Common areas like shared kitchens or games rooms are great ways to swap tips, tricks and travel stories with backpackers from all over the world.

Hostels have come a long, long way since the first youth hostel opened in 1912. From budget 'crash-pads' to five-star 'poshtels', today, hostels are for everybody, so whether you'd prefer a bed in a shared dorm or your own private room, you'll find most hostels are cheaper than a local hotel and far more fun.
