Tainted with nazi ugliness, where Hitler accelerated his rise to power, disconcerting to observe tourists enjoying the establishment without any recognition of its shameful part in German and global historical events (interestingly there were no plaques).
Great beer selection and Kaesspaetzl! Efficient service. Prices reasonable. Was disappointed that when I asked a band-member could they please play "Muss i' den", he said they'd play it for 5 Euros! I remain disgusted, and will never forget this. The band is there to entertain us; we shouldn't have to pay extra to hear a typical German folk tune!
Do not go at lunch or dinner time or Friday or Sat. All the tables were reserved for locals. It is so busy and the staff, while very very busy, are not polite about rushing past you and nearly taking your head off with a massive food tray.
A must for a visit to experience the enormity of it and have a drink only as well as listen to the oompah band, but EXCEPTIONALLY "touristy" ... Personally would rather experience the Great GErman Cuiseine which Munich and so much of GErmany have to offer at other Beer Halls / German Restaurants
I was expecting to a see a lousy and expensive tourist place, but the food was just excellent and the beer just at a fair price for a place like that. Something around 5 euros per 0.5 liters, even cheaper. The atmosphere is incredible, food is great. Definitely recommend!
Atmosphere was great but waiters were arrogant. They started sending us from one side to the other and then we realized they were sending us to be served by other waiters. Finally we got a seat and then we were served well and enjoyed the beer, the platter and the music.
The famous beer halls are difficult to describe - massive establishments dotted around the city. We tried the Augustiner Bräuhaus, Hofbräuhaus and Paulaner Bräuhaus. Augustiner had a massive beer garden (closed at the end of October), and a number of rooms. Great for a beer, but when we went back for food, struggled to find an unreserved table and when we did, the service was so bad we left. Hofbräuhaus was mad - huge, busy and noisy - but a great atmosphere in an interesting hall with brass band music. Found a table both times we went, and had decent food and great beer. Paulaner was, by comparison, quiet, and seemed smaller. But a lovely place to have a decent beer - and more like a British gastro-pub in its feel. If the others are too busy or noisy, I'd recommend a trip to Paulaner.
