This memorial was well worth seeing. Our tour guide gave us the time to walk in between the memorial and really soak everything up and figure out what we believed the memorial stood for. Do respect the rules and don't stand/sit on top of the parts where it's not allowed!
Poignant thought provoking memorial which is open to interpretation without signage or names on the differing size grey blocks. The cobbled area between and around the blocks in undulating as well which is an interesting feature when you walk through this. Don't miss the museum underneath the blocks which includes letters from victims to families written when they were minutes from death. Sad.
One block south of Brandenburg Gate and opposite Tiergarten is the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe (Holocaust Memorial). The memorial was designed by Peter Eisenman and Buro Happold between 2003-2005 and is free to visit. The outdoor section of the memorial is open 24 hours a day while the information centre is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10am to 7pm during winter months. Here you will find a large area which includes over 2700 concrete slabs positioned in a grid like pattern, creating numerous north-south and east-west paths through the memorial. You can walk through the memorial grounds, taking an infinite number of routes. The ground dips and rises at various points and the height of the slabs varies throughout. The slabs are slightly tilted as well. The scale of the memorial helps put into context the great number of victims of the Jewish Holocaust, while its design and construction is symbolic of a ordered and organised system that is out of kilter and not right. It is a thought provoking memorial and one that is well worth spending 15-30 minutes to see during visits to Berlin. Note: In nearby Tiergarten, there are additional memorials to other persecuted ethic and minority groups in Germany during the 20th century. These are worth finding and viewing as well if you have interest in this type of sightseeing during your travels.
What a fantastic piece of art. It's very emotional and you should give yourself plenty of time here to take it all in. I was outraged at the people who were taking obnoxious selfies and jumping on the monument. There are plaques on the floor they specifically request that you don't do this.
Just a bunch of pillars. Sort of like a grave yard, but without all the grave stone marking/history/stories. I'm sure for what they spent they could have made it a lot more interesting, like placing some of the Holocost victoms names or family histories on the pillars.
This was a wonderful memorial to remember so many people that lost their lives. It is very big and many were allowing their children to run around in it. I recommend just going and just taking a few moments to take it in.
the room was very nice with a very nice balcony. Location was ok, restaurants around and walkable to the center of town and holocaust memorial.,
