Very long walk from train station to Oktoberfest. Beer very expensive. Bus, team and train good. Julian's/Bed Kelly's bar very good. Beer price reasonable. Sunday karaoke brilliant. I sang Let it be and I want you to want me by Cheap trick. Got huge round of applause, people shaking my hand saying very well sung. Made me proud and happy.
Not for me. The security on the gates need to decide on the rules regarding handbags. You really do need to take small bags. 1st visit no problem. 2ndbag was checked inside. 3rd not allowed in as bag was too big.
Splash out and buy a dirndl/lederhosen of decent quality. We went in casual clothes and wished we had dressed up. Go early afternoon for lunch and a wander and try to settle in to a Bier hall around 4:30pm.
We enjoyed walking the grounds. Beer Halls were filled by 10:30 in the morning! It's a lovely carnival and no cost to get in! Watch where you're walking as some toss their breakfast with the early beer drinking!
Genuinely friendly and welcoming people, friendly and buzzing atmosphere. Make an effort to wear some traditional clothing, we had 'fancy dress' lederhosen and felt like we fitted in well enough! Definitely try to get in before 11am to get a table inside a tent, but if the weather is fine then an outside table is also good, we were lucky on our second day to have warm sunshine and stopped outside all afternoon.
This is a must-see for everyone visiting Munich in the last 2 weeks of September. There's something for every age - from roller coasters to the best beer in the world. An insider tip for foreign visitors: young people 16 years of age and older are legally allowed to drink beer. Enjoy!
