Get there early so you can go on to somewhere else. If you are walking make sure you are not being guided by sings for drivers. When I went there I tried to work out my way back and ended up about a third of the way round the city wall from where I wanted to go/ I got so lost I couldn't explain to a bus driver what part of the city I was going/ it took me 90 minutes to sort myself out.
A lot of history which needs to be absorbed, so the place needs at least two hours, maybe more. The guide (the Huawei pallet) was simply amazing and the latest technology!! I want to say a special thank you to developers of the programme!
Nice to visit, but horrible organisation for the summer time. The place can get as hot as 45 degrees Celsius (113 degrees Fahrenheit ) on the inside and there is no air conditioning, despite the fact that they still have very old paintings and decorations that would preserve better in an air conditioned environment. The price for the visit is quite high ... close to 12 EUR per person or something like that and you don't really get to enjoy the visit in summer, because of the torturing heat. The park next to the palace is closed at 20 PM (22 PM in June and July) for things like "safety" ... which is really ridiculous, considering that we pay taxes for that "safety" and if we pay ... we should enjoy the 'safety' instead of being locked out from all the parks in the city. So if you plan to visit the palace in the summer, get ready to be scorched and don't bet on resting or having a small picnic in the adjacent park after 20:00 PM because it's closed and also not before 20:00 PM because the sun will be very hot to enjoy anything but water with ice.
The exterior is absolutely amazing. The interior relies on iPad-like devices that run a semi-VR experience. This means that there is nothing recreated inside the palace, and that you view reconstructions of the rooms through the device. It's a very modern and unique way to see something, but actually the interior of the palace looks very clean and new, and is really a shell. An interesting history, but one we felt we didn't need to physically enter the palace to see.
Vast and remarkably intact considering French history. Recommend studying in advance of a visit, local guides are rather unenthused, better to know your history and you’ll better appreciate. Most of the palace is empty, so your imagination could help enrich a visit.
A must to visit during your trip to Avignon, where you learn about some dramatic historic events and the relationship between Vatican and Southern France. A bonus - there is a nice gift shop at the end of the Palace Tour, with a pretty good selection of local wines of Chateauneuf-du-Pape appelation.
It was blocks away from the papal palace - couldn't have been more central. It had everything one might want in an apartment: separate bedroom and living room, and a kitchen well furnished for cooking dinners that even included a dishwasher. It was a bit stylish and very comfortable. Sharon was delightful, as others have mentioned. We chickened out on driving the narrow streets of the old town, so she came to the car and directed us. (At one narrow place, she said "don't worry, my car is bigger and I can get through")
Absolutely gorgeous apartment to stay with such wonderful facilities- everything possible was thought of to make our stay so enjoyable. Joris our host was extraordinarily helpful and considerate giving us lots of time to tell us where to eat etc in Avignon. He left us a lovely bottle of wine and could not have been more helpful and thoughtful. The apartment was spotlessly clean and was miraculously quiet. The situation was ideal very near the Papal Palace but away from the crowds. Has a wonderful atmosphere. We would love to return
This small boutique hotel is located in the heart of Avignon right behind the papal palace. There is no parking but the good side to that is that there pretty much are no cars on the street either... The place is nice and comfortable and the hosts are very friendly and helpful. I was traveling alone with my children and they constantly made sure that we had everything we needed. We really enjoyed our 2 night stay in the city.
The apartment is in the heart of Avignon with impressive views across the old rooftops to the Papal Palace. It is very light and airey modern apartment. Split over two floors it has a well equipped kitchen, sitting room, bathroom and bedroom on the first floor; the second bedroom (with two double beds) and bathroom is on a mezzanine floor. Julie the host was very helpful and welcoming.
The owner is very kind. she left a bottle of milk in the fridge for us to use with morning tea/ coffee. Though it was a studio apartment, it has a full size fridge and all cooking utensils etc. The sofa bed was comfortable. The actual bed was very good. The location is very convenient for visiting Papal palace. Highly recommend!
Apartment is in a great location only steps from the Papal Palace but it’s 35 ancient stone stairs up with big suitcases! We were afraid we’d slip and fall so I’d recommend you be an agile and fit person to access this apartment! Host was very friendly and helpful!
This is a lovely place. Probably more of a boutique hotel run by a hospitable family. They were helpful but respected their guests' privacy. Restaurants close by and with easy walking distance to Pont D 'Avignon and Papal palace. Great kitchenette.
The hotel was very good and the location was just a very short walk to the Papal palace. Parking was adjacent and was discounted by the property.
Great location. Walking distance from the Papal Palace. Very clean hotel and helpful and kind staff
Brilliantly central location - 2 mins from Papal Palace. Very spacious apartment
Once you're at the centre there is no modern building. Plenty of mediaeval and baroque churches, and the staggeringly intact Papal palace set in a restful garden
Enjoying the interior of the Papal palace and a meal at the the AOC wine bar
The completeness of the mediaeval buildings (and painted surfaces), lack of traffic, excellent audioguide to the Papal palace and the detail about the status of Avignon as a frontier town before its absorption into France - plenty of personalities and incidents
