If your trip is only to see the clock tower and Big Ben, wait until at least 2023 as at present, it is being supported and is covered in scaffold. The bell is only rung on special occasions at the moment. The Houses of Parliament are visible as is the Abbey.
Big Ben is under construction right now and will be for the next three years (2022 completion according to a guard). You can only see the clock face under the scaffolding if you walk over the bridge and look back.
I went in May, when it was very cool in London and was not prepared for cold weather. If you go April or May, take a sweater. However Big Ben, though not so big by today's standards, was fabulous to see!
It’s wonderful ... though the area gets very busy ... once you have taken your photos I recommend.. walking back down the embankment.. stop off at the Hispaniola boat ... and have a cocktail .. watch the London eye , view Big Ben , from it !! The cocktails are wonderful .. £10 each but made to perfection!!! ... I was a barmaid for years and had 4 fantastic cocktails from this boat .. no disappointment at all ... would have stayed longer but I still had places to go
Usually a good photographic moment, but the scaffolding's been up for a few years and potentially up until 2021. It's right near Westminster Abbey and a wonderful location. Right near the Thames. A must see, with or without the scaffolding. Enjoy!
Because of renovation process, while I visited you could only see 1/3 of the tower because the lower 2/3 was surrounded by scaffolding. The bell will not ring for the next 5 years either, providing a rather dull experience.
The location was absolutely perfect. After the delicious breakfast we went for a walk down by the Thames and enjoyed gorgeous views of parliament and Big Ben! We literally couldn’t have been better placed. The hotel was very clean, decent sized rooms and very lovely pillows and sheets. I was very impressed !
Big room, with tea, coffee, biscuits, with view to the river, parliament, Big Ben. There is a pool, a sauna and a steam room. Good breakfast. Nice staff.
