Quite a climb but worth it, in summer can get very hot and sunny as the is minimal shade so do not forget to wear a hat also consider going in the morning or late afternoon as it gets cooler with a good breeze.
Book early and get there very early....avoid the extreme crowds if going during the peak season (July.Aug). Bring your own water and food) as prices are "very expensive". Also wear appropriate shows, as it can get very slippery.
Kids up to 18 (!) Years have Free entrance. Show the ID at the ticket office and you get their tickets. Adults are 20 euro at the ticket office. The ticket machines dont have the option for kids up to 18 years- at least I did not find it.
Although the Acropolis is the main attraction, there are actually many other ancient sites/ruins included in the ticket for the Acropolis and history buffs could easily spend 4-5 hours up there, I did!
go very early. the line is insane. be aware that the stone while climbing is quite slippery. we saw a number of people fall. asie from the long line to purchase tickets it is best to be there early because in the summer months it is very very hot up there
The Acropolis is a beautiful centerpiece of Athens. We were lucky enough to be in the city on one of their free Sundays (which is once a month from November to March). Not only is the Acropolis free, but several others of the must-see ruins like the Agora. If you are not there on a free Sunday and you want to see several of the ruins it is worth while purchasing the combinatioin ticket to make things faster. We recommend getting there really early just as it's opening. It helps you to avoid the rush and queues. Take as many photos as you can from all angles as it is beautiful. Make sure as you do so you are still respectful as it is a historic monument, and if you don't want to get into trouble with some of the more militant guards.
New excellent hotel with great design, impeccable staff in a good location, metro is just a few minutes away and the Kolonaki area is hip and offers many restaurants and bars. Very nice and comfortable rooftop terrace to enjoy the Acropolis view with some cocktails. Rooms are extremely clean and stylish with their industrial style. The staff is outstanding, very nice and attentive, they offered us proactively a breakfast box since we had to check out in the middle of the night. The Modernist will for sure become my go-to hotel in Athens!
This is the second time we have stayed in the same hotel - and in the same apartment. 2-bedroom apartment on the 3rd floor. Everything remains as it was last year, except for the disinfection stations and the way it is served at breakfast. All the staff are very kind and happy to help, and the feeling of the place is homely and pleasant. The location is perfect, surrounded by restaurants and a short drive or long walk, from the Acropolis. Even if a little noisy - so it is in all of Athens.
The location is perfect! It is across Electra Hotel. It is walking distance to all the major sites in Athens especially the Acropolis. The host was very thoughtful and kept in touch with us throughout our stay. The apartment is also spacious and has pretty much everything you need. It is close to Plaka walking street which means also close to the restaurants. Loved our stay and would love to stay here again.
Perfect location with good restaurants around (personal advise to go to the restaurant "Nice n easy"). Friendly hotel stuff with very interesting advises to go and visit the city. As for the room, it is designed with a good look and taste, clean and comfortable. Place is calm. Being in Athens, not only Acropolis or other sightseeing places you will remember, but the hotel as well!
Amazing location! A short walk from the Acropolis and the Temple of Olympian Zeus, which we could just about see from the balcony. Nice big rooms and a well stocked kitchen! This is an apartment, not a hotel, which was great to have on a long trip. There are no staff to check you in just some very detailed easy to follow instruction on how to access your room.
Location was perfect with easy access to bus and tram station. Owner of the property was very helpful with everything and helped us in transferring our luggage early to the apartment. Apartment was very clean and spacious, highly recommend to anyone coming to Athens area who wants access to all transportation and historical sites of Acropolis.
The area is really nice and cosy. Many hotels in Athens are located in spooky areas (or expensive areas for tourists) but this one is where "the normal Greeks" live. There are restaurants, shops nearby, Acropolis is near etc. Staff was friendly, wifi worked fine and so on.
- very convenient location right in downtown Athens, perfect for a city break - the apartment is right next to the subway station - very clean and spacious apartment with modern amenities - brilliant view of the Acropolis from the balcony, just like in the pictures
This is a newly refurbished apartment with top of the line finishes. Absolutely stunning 5 minutes walk to PlAda. Stunning view of the Acropolis. As well forgot a space carryon in the apartment and they helped me tremendously by shipping it to my next hotel.
Large apartment, close (short walks) to everything: Syntagma Square, Art museum, Plaka, Acropolis. The host was very kind and gave us valuable tips about the nearby zone and Athens in general.
Go beyond the Acropolis and explore the Agora and Kerameikos, imagining yourself entering Athens along the road from the port of Piraeus, and following the Panathenaic Way to the Akropolis. Stop at the museums along the way to understand the significance of each site. Then visit the National Archaeological Museum to see that classical Athens is just one of Greece's many magnificent cultures.
The new Acropolis museum is a must see and a visit to the museum of Archaeology is a close second.
If you want to avoid crowds while seeing the famous sights, start out early and be at the sights when they open. I arrived at the Acropolis around 8:10 AM and there were only around 20 people on the whole compound. It was wonderful! There was a crowd climbing the hill when I descended, though!
Consider visiting Athens in May or September. May is just lovely. Spring flowers like poppies and daisies cover the hills. It's not too busy and not too hot. Remember that on holidays you are always moving so consider the weather when you make your plans. Also, research opening hours as the Acropolis is closed May 1; and other Ancient Landmarks are closed on certain days and on certain hours any other day.
The museums were free on certain days. The opening days and time of the new Acropolis museum was incorrect.
The new Acropolis museum was truly impressive with modern displays & interpretations.
