Monkey Forest is definitely worth visiting -- but be careful not to be scratched and think about transport in advance -- there as a lack of taxi stops nearby and online taxi works extremely poor. But you can as for help one of the security guards :)
very nice, green and well designed place. the monkeys are very funny and creative! :D entrance fee is Rp 80K. don't bring any food or drink, the monkeys will grab it from you. put your sunscreen on. good to be there in the morning. and yes, do not be scared, do not over-react towards the monkeys, just try to be as calm as possible when they try to jump on you, they're sweet and won't harm you. otherwise, have a fun visit! :)
I was very disappointed to find out that this place was essentially a glorified zoo. I guess me being the naive tourist I am, I assumed that the "monkey sanctuary" in Ubud, Bali would be some kind of natural park built through the jungle where tourists walk through to potentially see some monkeys in their natural habitat. Well not only are the monkeys trapped and brought to this confined forest space, they are taught to be entertainment for tourists by doing tricks for food. The monkeys are not in cages but they have no where else to go unless they want to roam the busy streets of Ubud. They are regularly fed by the workers who get them to dance and jump around for people to take pictures. I noticed some tattoos on the chests of the female monkeys and was told that is how they track which females have been sterilized. So after taking them out of their natural habitat and placing them all in this forest zoo, the females are taken away the ability to have babies for population control. I mean if that isn't a zoo, I don't know what is. Someone was bit by a female who was clearly trying to protect her baby. If I had strangers approaching my child and phones shoved in my face all day I don't think I would be very happy either. I loved Bali but I learned that anything that involves animals in Asia is always a tourist trap for money with no concern for the animals, I've only ever had bad experiences. Save your $10 and drive through the natural forests of Bali where you can see wild monkeys everywhere! As tourists we control which attractions stay open and which close down. Don't support this place!!
One of our very favorite spots in Bali. We love animals and nature, so this was the perfect combination. A jungle paradise, with wild monkeys running free. Just don't wear jewelry or carry plastic bags, which the monkeys can grab. And don't look monkeys in the eyes, which is taken as aggression. The statues and temple were so amazing. This is a photographer's paradise
Sit still or better yet, start taking out something from your backpack, like a candy bar etc. and the monkeys will come and steal it for sure. To have a good picture taken just sit there and wait and one will surely find you interesting enough to come and sit on your shoulder.
Really great1 make sure to walk on the paths leading you into the actual forest! (Don't just stay in the temple areas). You witness the monkeys doing a lot, a lot of baby monkeys also. If you don't want them to climb on you, don't sit down!
Laughing Buddha in Monkey Forest Rd, Casa Luna in Jl Ubud.
If you go to the Sacred Monkey Forest, don't forget your insect repellant! Mosquitos even during daytime are present. Don't miss going to the traditional dances at the water palace (close to starbucks) and the Ubud Palace, there is also another location for dance shows, on the Monkey Forest street. People are selling the tickets on the street, different show every day. Great food from the local restaurants, and great location if you want to travel to other places with temples, like lake Beratan for example.
The air around Ubud especially near the Monkey Forest are perfect for relaxation escape.. Very fresh, yet very sunny during the day
I happened to choose this villa which is located in quiet place, I can let my children run around, It is quite safe. Some of the villas had kitchen which you can cook urself. When bringing children to Monkey Forest make sure your children dont bring angy toys or food along, they monkeys will grab it. In some villas, there are lots of mosquitos.. Make sure you have something prepared for it. Better choose villas with air conditioning, because it is heaty during the night.. Not really comfy for children to sleep
A must while in Ubud if you like good music is The Laughing Buddha Bar on Monkey Forest Road! Different music each night with brilliant musicians performing music ranging from blues, soul, acoustic, Latin and rock. Also check out the Havana Bar for authentic Cuban food and live music which is off Monkey Forest Road just past the soccer field.
Me and my girlfriend had a lovely day in ubud at the monkey forest and cone back had dinner and a couple of drinks then sat in our villa and star gazed and it was perfect
