Very educational. There was plumbing in the wealthier homes, food take out shops, beautiful frescoes, steam & bath houses. A real ancient city. Plan to walk & climb a lot, so wear comfy shoes!
Stating the obvious but flat comfortable shoes are a must as is plenty of water. As it is so open when it's hot it really is hot with nowhere to sit in the shade. Also advise to purchase skip the line tickets prior to visiting as large tourist/school groups can delay the queue. Guides are available but we preferred to walk round on our own & spent seven hours at the site
The archaeology was amazing. Off season is the best time to visit and in the afternoon when the crowds are less It was impossible to work out where we were and how to get from A to B from the maps provided by the tourist bureau in Pompei and from the map at the gate. The audio guide rented from the tourist bureau gave a good background , however it relied on numbered points which did not exist within the ruins as the numbers had fallen down and had not been replaced. The cost of personal guided tours was over the top. Thank goodness we had a map on my I phone and a map in my Lonely Planet. We stayed in Pompei overnight at hotel Diana and where there are many good local restaurants.
