They run free one side rides to Butterworth, should you be interested in making a short trip there. Though there is nothing to see much there. Butterworth is the closest railway station to Penang; in case you're looking at a train ride to an place nearby.
This is where you go to get information about how to travel wherever you want to go by public bus. AND be sure to take a walk out on one of the "Clan Jetties" -- the Chew Clan is right next to bus terminal
I missed my train. This stupid old fashioned ferry has no information and requires a ridiculous amount of climbing up and down stairs at Butterworth railway station when in fact the walkway connects to the platform on a level - except you're not allowed to use this connection. If they ever finish Butterworth station I think we will all be long gone. I remember it from 1999 and it was being rebuilt then, it's still being rebuilt now. The ferry costs 1:20 Ringit which can only be paid into a turnstile using the correct change in OLD STYLE coins. You have to queue ata ticket window to exchange new money for old and then have to put it into a broken turnstile with the assistance of a staff member. Why on earth do they still do this? The ferry is Ok but it takes twice the time it should to make the crossing by the time you have messed about with walking up and down. A little bit of modernisation would make this a more pleasurable trip! compare with the Star Ferry in Hong Kong which is old fashioned but highly efficient and a pleasure to use.
You only pay for single journey. Return journey is FREE. Bring along your camera for some great pics. Well planned Jetty with bus terminal. FREE bus ride available from Jetty (within town limits)-called "Hop On Hop Off CAT service"!
