A cathedral put up by the Spaniards over an existing Inca temple. A good illustration of how the amazing Inca culture was destroyed by the Spaniards. Their religion denigrated, their language and cultural beliefs suppressed, slave labor used to build catholic structures over Inca temples and palaces and even to produce artwork for churches that glorifies Catholicism and depicts the indigenous people as primitive beings. Cultural genocide.
There are often activities and celebrations in front of the cathedral during the day and evening. Feel free to simply sit on the step and enjoy the view. Remember to bring a sweater or jacket for the evening. As soon as the sun drops behind the mountains, it gets cool to cold.
The Cathedrals a jaw dropping unfortunately you cannot take any pictures in here don’t even think about it lol there’s many hidden cameras that you’ll see and it’s not worth getting kicked out from this place. Just enjoy it while your there
25 soles entrance or a very early free entrance but mass at 7am and different early hours in the week and weekend. Must see. Art of the last scene is amazing so is the audioguide tour (free audioguide with entrance). Full of Andean and Spanish culture.
It can be entered for free during the morning mass (until about 8.30-9.00am). Although there's a sign that entry for tourists not allowed, they cannot just kick you out if you just quietly walk in and look inside. No photography allowed at any time. Respect the mass and people attending it.
If you want a quick visit, try visit it from 6:00 - 9:00 am You could hear the mise, but also look the amazing architecture and paintings, it shows a really interesting mix form the cultures Inca and Spanish. Highly recommended!
