It is glitzy and it is bolshoi. And it has history on its side - commemorating divine intervention in the ultimate defeat of Napoleon's invasion in 1812. Stalin ordered it to be blown up in 1931 and then, in the late 1980s, President Boris Yeltsin supported its rebuilding.
This church, supposedly the biggest orthodox church in the world, was rebuilt in the 90s on a site of a former church, whch was demolished in the 30s. Only one icon was saved from the first church, it is now in its lower part. The upper aprt is stunning, beautifully painted. It is also possible to climb up to the church´s terraces to enjoy the view over Kremlin and the city.
If you have the chance to visit while the Priest is giving a small mass in the right corner with a full Choral next to him ... Wow! Magical and very inspiring. The ambiance will transport you to another level, and you may surprise yourself by feeling a tear coming down your cheek. The sound and reverb inside the church with the Choral were sublime. I did not want to be anywhere else on the planet ... for such an exquisite moment.
The history of this place, explained inside, is very interesting. Prepare for moderate security control at entrance. The view from pedestrian bridge nearby is very nice (you can see Kremlin, too), although ugly monument to Peter I spoils a little bit the general view.
This apartment is even better than advertised. Huge place, nice sized, well equipped kitchen and living space. Comfy bed. Nice bathroom and shower pressure. And OMG the view. You are basically looking down over the iconic Cathedral of Christ the Saviour. Valentin was super responsive and accommodating, allowing us to drop our luggage off early and allowing us a late check out. He left a nice bottle of Spanish wine too which was a nice touch. Id highly recommend his place to a family or business traveler in Moscow.
