The audio tour is great! Everyone can enjoy this tour at his own pace. Also there are Park Rangers that will tell you more amazing stories about different aspects of the island and it's buildings.
I was actually taken there by my friend, as I hadn't planned to go there and if I has missed this, I would have regret this until the rest of my life! I was very surprised, how great Alcatraz - place and its' history is. Not only the travel there is fast and pleasurable, but being there and listening to the audio guide with recorded voices of prisoners and guards, while doing a tour inside the Alcatraz prison is unforgettable experience! Highly recommended!
Tour kept my youngest son aged 7 entertained. We were fortunate enough to visit on a day when one of the few survivors from Alcatraz was there. Really interesting stories and delightful to meet him. Trip needs to be booked weeks in advance. It sells out very fast
What a feeling following in the footsteps of the criminals, makes you realize how harsh it was and how seeing San Francisco so close must have created a feeling of longing for freedom among the inmates
This was the highlight of our trip to San Francisco we did the full behind the scenes tour - live guide lots of behind the scenes areas and stories and finished up in the jail at night - eerie. Came back in the darkness and saw the beautiful city lights from the Bay - well worth the extra dollars. Book early!
Alcatraz met all reviews and recommendations. *****MUST BOOK IN ADVANCE - BEFORE HOLIDAY***** Early the better - we left at 8:45 on a package through Viator (Alcatraz and SF Tour on Trambus (A Tram on Wheels) - a real head turner)
This is a small hotel . But it had a quiet charm and quaint old feel. It is well positioned to access local bars and restaurants and they were of good quality. The hotel is a little dated, but it was clean and tidy. Rooms were comfortable. Staff were helpful. Beware parking - there is an parking facility but the charge is $25 per day. You can walk down to the Bay shoreline by just turning left - dead straight walk past loads of landmarks to an amazing view of Alcatraz - get the Tram back. Decent friendly hotel - we enjoyed the stay
The room was of a good size, clean and in an ideal location for sightseeing. The reception staff were friendly and were happy to answer any questions we had. The hotel has covered parking. Around ten minutes in a taxi for catching the tour to Alcatraz and driving to the Golden Gate Bridge. Breakfast is not offered, but there in an excellant restaraunt that serves breakfast five minutes walk down the street called Home Plate.
The greatest thing about this hotel was localization. It was right between Chinatown and Italian neighbourhood, so you have access to all delicious food from both those cultures. It was also in a walking distance to the bank, with the view of Alcatraz and all the bay. The room was nice and clean, with a big, comfy bed. There was a little noise from the streets, but nothing above the average.
First impressions count so when you enter the Hotel you are made welcome and get a feel that this is a good place to stay Location - excellent - close to transport an easy walk to Alcatraz Ferry and Fishermans Wharf - Room was very clean and well appointed. Breakfast was plentiful and always topped up. Good selection of foods for most tastes.
Continental breakfast was included and plenty to start the day with. A great pub connected to the hotel which had very reasonable dinners that also tasted great. The barman was friendly too. The hotel itself was handy to the cable cars, Union Square and just a walk down the hill to the trolleys for Fishermans Wharf and Alcatraz ferries.
Room was clean bed comfortable situated on a busy road but not too far from the pier to catch boat for Alcatraz . Cab driver told us the hotel had had some trouble previously with break ins but we never had any trouble it was very quiet considering on a main road. Lady on front desk was very pleasant and helpful.
Location was fantastic with a cable car stop right outside the hotel, taking you down to the waterfront Room was very quiet, with great views over the city Particular highlights were the cable cars, Alcatraz [you need to book in advance] and the other public transport systems
Brilliant funky hotel right on Fisherman's Wharf in the heart of the action. If time is of the essence this location is perfect. Pier 39 right opposite and views of Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz.
Excellent location. Fabulous room overlooking Alcatraz and ocean. Hotel was funky and extremely comfortable and the staff were friendly and helpful. Loved the hotel !
Rooms are a good size and comfortable central location lots of history regarding Alcatraz and the hotel is very safe
Number 1 attraction is Alcatraz and you can't come here without visiting. Amazing experience. However this was probably surpassed by cycling over the Golden Gate Bridge to Sausalito and taking the ferry back. You will get amazing photos of the bridge doing it this way. World Series Baseball was on during our trip to California which San Francisco were in and eventually won which added an extra buzz to the city. In our time in San Francisco the Giants were in Kansas but the whole city was alive with Giants talk. Buy a MUNI visitor passport. At the start of the day you'll want to walk everywhere but those hills take their toll and you'll be glad you can jump on any bus, streetcar or cable car later in the day
For Alcatraz book a few weeks ahead, especially on the weekends
Try the Big Bus an excellent way to see this large and varied city. Try later in the year the weather is good and the summer travellers will have gone home. A trip to Alcatraz island is worth the time but book before you arrive to avoid disappointment. If the crowds overwhelm you head for the Haight or the Golden Gate park where there is space for all.
Listen to the history of Alcatraz first hand from convicts and guards via the headphones while exploring the cells. The voices and background sounds bring everything to life.
Alcatraz is the most prominent tourist thing to do but if you don't want to spend an afternoon there, or tickets are sold out (get them in advance btw), just waking along the pier there is loads to see. If you only have a few days there, a good way to see the city is the bus tours.
S F is quite a beautiful attraction to visit, we couldn't avoid the crowds. in fact there were so many crowds we missed visiting alcatraz it was booked out for days in advance and we missed out.
