About Berlin

Including tips for the best time to visit Berlin

Berlin is a city of rapid growth, where innovation and diversity have fused together to create a young and vibrant culture. You’ve only to join a walking tour to discover examples of jaw-dropping street art, or evidence of a music scene that has drawn the likes of David Bowie and Iggy Pop as one-time residents. The city is also one of Europe’s major startup capitals, with new enterprises opening every week.

That being said, landmarks of eras gone by remain among the city’s biggest attractions. The historic Reichstag wows visitors with its gleaming glass dome, while sections of the graffitied Berlin Wall, which divided the city for almost three decades, still stand in Potsdamer Platz. The iconic Brandenburg Gate has become a symbol of reunification since the wall fell in 1989, and is undoubtedly one of the highlights of any visit.

In summer, it tends to be hot enough to explore the city outdoors, or enjoy a spot of sunbathing in Tiergarten Park.

In winter, visitors flock to Germany’s capital to see glittering Christmas Markets like Berliner Weihnachtszeit, which is set up annually behind Alexanderplatz. Wrap up warm and stroll from stall to stall, buying festive souvenirs and mugs of hot Glühwein in this storybook setting.

Berlin is a fabulous city for museums, shopping, education...

1 November 2021

Berlin is a fabulous city for museums, shopping, education and all types of entertainment. It also has lots of beautiful parks, quirky suburbs and multicultural influences. It even has places to swim. Public transport is fantastic and cheap. Driving around and parking are very frustrating. Over the years Berlin has changed a lot. Learning about its history is best done by visiting the place.

Such an amazing city, I am just sorry that I didn't...

Such an amazing city, I am just sorry that I didn't visit it years ago. So much history on every street, so many places to eat and have a drink. The locals are so friendly and helpful. Majority of German people we met spoke great English - Getting around is easy with the fantastic public transport system. If you are going to be spending a day sightseeing then get a one day all zone travel pass [€10], you can use it on buses, trains [under and overground] and trams. Book ahead for entrance to sights / museums because at the moment with C19 restrictions still more or less in place admission is limited in some places. Shopping? Well, it is a shopper's paradise. All the big high street names are here, as well as all the high end names [Gucci, Chanel etc.] Plenty for every budget. I will definitely be going back, as there is so much to see and so.

Also wanted to add that the bed, queen , was fantastic.

Also wanted to add that the bed, queen , was fantastic. Berlin has so many qualities, atmosphere, culture, uncanny feeling of history and survival, through the sense of humour and straightforwardness of the Berliners, might be mistaken for brusqueness but is based on this courageous sense of humour. And our family and friends are here... and the opera and ballet...

We stayed 5 nights in Berlin after arriving for Berlin...

6 October 2021

We stayed 5 nights in Berlin after arriving for Berlin marathon. Of course Covid precautions made everything a little more difficult but we really enjoyed running & walking around town and the parks. Recommend the DDR museum, and boat ride. German folks were nice and helpful even though our use of the language was minimal. Plan on returning to visit more museums and things we missed.
