About New York

Including tips for the best time to visit New York

New York City is somewhere that feels familiar before you even visit. Countless films and TV shows are shot here, so when we see the trademark yellow taxi cabs, the hot dog vendors or the dazzling lights of Manhattan, there's a strange sense of déjà vu. It's also home to what is arguably the world's most famous skyline, dominated by the Art Deco marvel of the Empire State Building. Constantly reinventing and setting new trends in fashion, food and art, the city is also a major hub for finance and trade, with the famous Wall Street at its core.

The city is split into the boroughs of Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx and Staten Island, and each has its own unique character. Manhattan Island is home to the trendy neighbourhoods of Greenwich Village and SoHo, while Brooklyn features a Botanic Garden, the New York Aquarium and the famous Coney Island. A ferry from Battery Park to Ellis Island offers a great opportunity for some incredible views of the city, before reaching the fascinating Immigration Museum. You'll also sail past the iconic Statue of Liberty, with plenty of time to snap photos from all angles.

The city's Broadway shows are second to none, with a variety of major musicals proving the pick of the bunch. The giant green oasis of Central Park offers a perfect spot for a peaceful stroll, as well as featuring lakes, theatres and ice-skating rinks.

New York is served by three major airports: JFK, Newark Liberty International and LaGuardia, with public transport options available at each one.

I stayed in the Times Square Area therefore things are really expensive but I expected that. Loved the street called Restaurant Row, which all the Restaurants are available to you. If you have children very hard to find 🚻 restrooms if your site seeing. So go into Target, Macy's etc.

Meadows, wild flowers & skyscrapers the High Line...

15 May 2022

Meadows, wild flowers & skyscrapers the High Line Chelsea a must walk down to Hudson Yards. Visited Statue of Liberty/Ellis Island but cheaper to go direct to Pier to book tickets at Ticket Office for joint cruises. Central Park is a joy on a warm sunny May day to escape loud manic NYC. Visit Lower Manhatten Greenwich Village very good vibes bars/clubs on a night really enjoyable. Be aware of the "professional beggers" opening doors @ entrances to subway when getting your metro tickets from machines they pounce when you hesitate when keying in on the touchscreen & "offer to help" then expect a tip - really!!! New York New York - its hectic fast moving loud & manic but we are missing it already.

Absolutely loved our trip.

14 May 2022

Absolutely loved our trip. This was my second time visiting, and I can't wait to go bak again! You could never see everything, so each time its like a new experience. We saw all the main sights, and ventured out around other suburbs using the subway - once you get the hang of it, its the best way to get around. We did a helicopter tour which was amazing, but walking around is such a fun way to explore. Go to Stardust in Time Square - its a must! Singing wait staff will entertain you with all the big Broadway hits while you wait for your food. I can't wait to go back to this city, just amazing!

New York is very different to what it was pre Covid.

12 May 2022

New York is very different to what it was pre Covid. Every block has either a closed hotel or offices for rent. Times Square is still busy but all other streets are noticeably quieter. Scaffolding is nearly everywhere even the famous Waldorf Astoria is closed as are many stores.

We loved NYC!

12 May 2022

We loved NYC! We stayed for 11 nights and 11 days and managed to cover all the attractions on our list. My favourite was the Brooklyn bridge and the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens (we were lucky to have gone at a time when the flowers were in full bloom which happens only for a couple of weeks a year in April). Central Park was also very nice to walk around and the MET is a must see for art lovers.
