New York City is somewhere that feels familiar before you even visit. Countless films and TV shows are shot here, so when we see the trademark yellow taxi cabs, the hot dog vendors or the dazzling lights of Manhattan, there's a strange sense of déjà vu. It's also home to what is arguably the world's most famous skyline, dominated by the Art Deco marvel of the Empire State Building. Constantly reinventing and setting new trends in fashion, food and art, the city is also a major hub for finance and trade, with the famous Wall Street at its core.
The city is split into the boroughs of Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx and Staten Island, and each has its own unique character. Manhattan Island is home to the trendy neighbourhoods of Greenwich Village and SoHo, while Brooklyn features a Botanic Garden, the New York Aquarium and the famous Coney Island. A ferry from Battery Park to Ellis Island offers a great opportunity for some incredible views of the city, before reaching the fascinating Immigration Museum. You'll also sail past the iconic Statue of Liberty, with plenty of time to snap photos from all angles.
The city's Broadway shows are second to none, with a variety of major musicals proving the pick of the bunch. The giant green oasis of Central Park offers a perfect spot for a peaceful stroll, as well as featuring lakes, theatres and ice-skating rinks.
New York is served by three major airports: JFK, Newark Liberty International and LaGuardia, with public transport options available at each one.

Too much smell of marijuana in Times Square!
27 May 2022
Too much smell of marijuana in Times Square!! Ridiculous! Was there with my daughter. Would have stayed longer if that was not so obnoxiously prevalent. Are there no limits? Apparently not. Won’t return to Times Square. Possibly not NY at all.
Big city, busy and lots of people.
26 May 2022
Big city, busy and lots of people. Be prepared to walk and walk some more. People cross streets without regard to red light. Cross at your own risk. Central Park was nice and peaceful. Piles of garbage on the road, smell was awful at times. People were eager to help with directions. Food is expensive, 20% tip is customary and sometimes added to bill. Subway is efficient.

Loved 6th Avenue in Chelsea - variety of shops, lively but not mid-town crowded. Got a fantastic "green tea" pedicure at Clover Nails (435 Park Ave), nicely passed time between end of work day and time to meet friends for dinner.

26 May 2022
New York City's great potential is limited by the high crime rates which seem to be the result of state and city officials' attempts to empty jails and defund the police. NYC visitors have to be constantly aware of their surroundings for the sake of personal safety. A financial executive was shot dead in the subway the day we left. The alleged assailant had 19 prior arrests. Crime seems to be the natural result of insufficient funds and police staffing. Unfortunately, the local and state government wants to defund the police and then wonder why crime rates explode! The Democratic party's social experiment is failing and discouraging tourism in NYC.
I really liked NYC.
26 May 2022
I really liked NYC. Overall the people are friendly. Of course with any big city, staying there cost a price. At minimum with cheap accommodations, you should prepare for about $100 minimum per day for other costs.
